Islamic Marriage Ceremony

Islamic Marriage Ceremony

We wish you all the best in your upcoming marriage. May Allah reward you and your family abundantly. Please find some advice and information on Australian marriage laws below. At the bottom of this page, you’ll find a marriage request form as well as information on each celebrant.

Civil Marriage Legal Requirements

  • Before you can legally marry, you must first sign and submit the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form to me. This must be submitted to me at least one month prior to the wedding. For 18 months, the form is valid.
  • In Australia, the legal age for civil marriage is 18. There is an exception when one of the parties is between the ages of 16 and 18 and wishes to marry someone older. In this case, the minor must obtain both a Judge’s or Magistrate’s permission and parental consent.
  • If you were born in Australia, you must present a birth certificate as proof of age and identity. If you were born outside of Australia, you can provide an overseas passport or birth certificate from your country of birth, which has been professionally translated into English. If the person born outside of the United States cannot produce a birth certificate or an international passport, the Celebrant will be able to fill out a Statutory Declaration with their full name, date of birth, place of birth, parents’ names, and an explanation as to why the birth certificate is not available. (Please note that an Australian passport is ineligible for the civil wedding ceremony.)
  • If you’ve been married before, you’ll need to show proof of how the previous marriage ended, such as a divorce certificate or, if your previous spouse is deceased, a death certificate.
  • On the day of your wedding, you must have two witnesses who are over the age of 18.
Islamic Marriage Requirements
  • You must provide identification proof.
  • If necessary, the bride must obtain permission from her Wali (the representative of the bride who would normally be her father, uncle, brother etc.)
  • Mahr distribution (Dowry).
  • If either of you has previously been married, you must show proof of how the previous marriage was ended.
  • At the ceremony, two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present.
